San Francisco, CA - February 1, 2023 - Since its inception in 2017, Kultivate Labs has been dedicated to building a thriving commercial corridor in the SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District. After a successful 2022, the non-profit economic development and arts organization will continue rolling out programming in the new year that reflects the needs and vision of the community at large such as new artist grants, space and other resources for pop-up businesses and artists, a free outdoor concert series, and a creative market spanning three events.

2022: Another Year of Success

Kultivate Labs, founded by Desi Danganan in 2017, has remained steadfast in its mission to provide economic opportunities for local businesses, funding for artists and spaces with community leaders in SOMA Pilipinas through its ecosystem of interconnected, mutually-supporting programs. In 2022, Kultivate Labs experienced much success with their programming, setting a precedent for the year to come:

“The pandemic was rough, but we made some strategic bets during shelter-in-place that would lay the foundation for our exponential growth,” says Desi Danganan, Founder and Executive Director of Kultivate Labs. “Building Kapwa Gardens and Balay Kreative Studios set the stage for us to activate Mission Street with arts, culture, commerce, and community. Together with our other community partners along Mission St from 4th and 6th St, SOMA Pilipinas was the shining light in the decaying economic core of San Francisco.”

Nikbo (she/they) is a shapeshifter. The Filipinx artist makes “Third Culture Pop” that blends pop aesthetics with textures and rhythms from the many cultures she was raised in: The Philippines, Morocco, Malawi, Canada, Kazakhstan, and the SF Bay Area.

“Since receiving the Balay Kreative Growth Grant, I’ve written and recorded a new EP, been featured in KQED, and grown my social media reach by at least 10%. The mentorship I received as a grantee helped dissolve some internal mindset obstacles that were keeping me from being more courageous and visible as an artist,” says musician and Balay Kreative Growth Grantee Nikbo. “Through the grant, I’ve connected with new artist friends and collaborators — inside and outside of the Balay Kreative program. I’m excited to watch us all thrive and enrich Bay Area culture as the seeds of these relationships keep growing.”
