Over $16K Raised for ‘Pinays Rising Scholarship’

Filipina Rapper Ruby Ibarra and San Francisco State Professor Dr. Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales Award 33 Recipients

June 9, 2020, San Francisco, CA - During a virtual graduation ceremony for Filipina/x graduates, an event hosted by the non-profit org Pinayista, 33 Filipinas/xes pursuing higher education were awarded $500 scholarships. Created by rapper and scientist Ruby Ibarra, and San Francisco State Professor and Founder of Pin@y Educational Partnerships, Dr. Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales in 2018, the mission of Pinays Rising is to promote the continuation of higher education while excelling in the areas of arts (visual, performance/music, conceptual, etc.) and/or community service and activism.

The 2020 Pinays Rising scholarship attracted 115 applicants from across the United States, and raised over $16,000 in donations in just a few weeks.

“The application videos for the Pinays Rising Scholarship literally made me cry.  I was so moved by the way the Pinay/x applicants were choosing to use their education to create positive change in the world,” shares Dr Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales. “From all over of the United States, these Pinays/xes will become doctors, nurses, psychologists, counselors, anthropologists, public health advocates, social workers, journalists, engineers, librarians, veterinarians, lawyers, filmmakers, performers, designers, entrepreneurs, educators, administrators, academics, and artists--while being activists. They truly embody what it means to be a Pinay/x who is Rising, a Pinay/x who is rising for and with her/their community(ies).”

“I am so happy with how the Pinays Rising scholarship program went this year. We had an extraordinary amount of support in donations from our communities and we were blessed to have grown our scholarship team with very like-minded and passionate Pinays,” shares Ruby Ibarra. “Going through the applications has always been a challenge, but this year was particularly difficult. I truly wish we had the budget to fund all of the students. This just serves as a reminder to me that we have to keep this program going and how important it is to invest in your youth as they are the next leaders and storytellers of the world. I remember as we discussed the applications as a team, all of us felt very inspired; they left us feeling confident in knowing that Pinays ARE rising and that they are a formidable force in the arts, education, and activism.”

Pinays Rising is accepting donations year round for the following year recipients, and currently seeking sponsors to partner with. For more information visit tinyurl.com/pinaysrising.
