Community members and commissioned artists will create hand-made lanterns to display at this free, family-friendly event. The festival features a parol lantern parade, a gallery of handmade parols, with live music and dance performances.

Kultivate Labs and SOMA Pilipinas are proud to announce funding to promote and celebrate San Francisco’s Filipino Cultural Heritage District. Bridge and Delta Publishing in partnership with The Filipino American Center of the San Francisco Public Library will host a book launch for its first book entitled, “Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong.” This children’s book, written by the late and great historian Dawn Bohulano Mabalon, Ph.D. with Gayle Romasanta, and richly illustrated by Andre Sibayan, tells the story of often forgotten United Farm Workers cofounder, Larry Itliong, his migration to the United States, and his lifelong fight for a farmworkers union.

Asian American Artists Reclaim Place at 17th Annual APAture Festival

Kearny Street Workshop (KSW) has been a hub for emerging Asian Pacific American (APA) artists for 45 years, and is the oldest APA arts organization in the country. Their flagship event, “APAture,” is a multidisciplinary arts festival now in its 17th season, featuring the work of emerging APA artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. The festival showcases talent in film, literature, music, performance, comics, zines and illustration, and visual art. From October 13 through November 4, over 60 artists will present their work to over 1,000 festival-goers across multiple venues. This year’s theme “RE/place” will create art that explores issues dominating the news today, including displacement, migration, and reclaiming place. Among the featured artists on the lineup are Janice Sapigao (Literary Arts/KQED’s Women to Watch), SETI X (Music/United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell), and APAture newbie Jody Stillwater, film category featured artist.
